  OED's primary ex. is from 1795, but here's one much earlier :

  1732 _A collection of voyages and travels, some now first printed from original manuscripts, others now first published in English. In six volumes _  (London: For John Walthoe et al.) VI  352: Which with a small gun-tackle we brought taught [sic] forwards upon the fore-castle.
