Tristan Jones mentions it in one of his books as a drinking song in the Royal Navy.
Though some of his well-known writings have turned out to be complete fiction (including _Heart of Oak_, an excellent and evocative "memoir" of WWII) Jones did serve from 1946 to 1959.

being used as a drinking song though I have never heard it that way.
