I just realized that George Thompson's note on Jennifer Schiff Berg's Ph.D.
dissertion, "From pushcart peddlers to gourmet take-out. New York's iconic
foods of Jewish origin. 1920 to 2005" (2006) was sent to the list and not
directly to George,. Sorry.
...
What does anyone have for "chili head"? My HDAS is packed. Anything in the
Dallas Morning News?

Chili Head

Someone who likes chili is called a “chili head.” The Chili Appreciation
Society (now the Chili Appreciation Society International, or CASI) began in the
1960s, and George Haddaway of Dallas was its “Chief Chili Head.” The CASI
popularized the term “chili head” and possibly coined it.

_Chili Appreciation Society International_
(http://www.chili.org/mission.html)
The Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc.’s mission is to promote
chili and raise money for charity. We are involved in over 500 chili cookoffs
per year and raise over $1,000,000.00 annually for local charities.
In addition to raising funds for charitable organizations in the United
States and participating foreign countries, we seek to educate the public about
the historic and cultural significance of chili - an indigenous American
tradition. We are working for the adoption of chili as the National Food of the
United States.
Annually, the Chili Appreciation Society International sanctions over 500
cookoffs that raises over $1,000,000.00 for charity. Corporate CASI, which has
the function of sanctioning all of these cookoffs, doing the necessary work to
tabulate cookoff results, and putting on the annual Terlingua International
Chili Championship, has an annual income of approximately $250,000.00. Out of
this annual income, not only were we able to cover all of the associated
costs and expenses of the TICC, but we were able to contribute close to
$60,000.00 to charity. Keep in mind that CASI is a 501(c)(3) corporation, which means
that we have no compensated officers or employees. This allows us to channel
all of our excess profits to charity.

30 June 1963, Chicago Tribune, “Texas Chili Experts Help Its Lovers Far and
Near” by Jack N. Fallon, pg. A1:
Chief Chili Head Goerge Haddaway of Dallas, who spreads the lore of chili,
ordered the Chili Appreciation society [International] to the rescue.

17 May 1964, Los Angeles Times, pg. Y28:
There is, if you haven’t heard, a Chili Appreciation Society
(International). It has a local chapter. And I have just become a member in good standing,
bearing Card T-69. The Chief Chili Head is George Haddaway; Chief Taster, Peg
Hereford.

14 August 1966, Chicago Tribune, “How about a bowl of chili?” by Robert
Cromie, pg. P4:
Despite the definition of chili found in a modern Mexican dictionary which
calls it “a detestable dish sold from Texas to New York City and erroneously
described as Mexican”—there are plenty of “chili heads” thruout the world,
including Harry James, President and Mrs. lyndon B. Johnson, and Elizabeth
Taylor, THE Elizabeth Taylor.
