Also the title of a World War II novel (1954) by L. H. Crockett.
The "L.H." stands for "Lucy Herndon." Evidently her publishers (Farrar Straus) thought a Marine Corps novel written by "Lucy Crockett" wouldn't sell.
The author had been a Red Cross volunteer on the island of Guadalcanal.

"The Magnificent Bastards" is the nickname for the 2nd Battalion of
the 4th Marine Regiment. (It was also the name of a short-lived rock
band with Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots.)
