Call for papers: Special Session on Teaching the History of the English Language at SHEL 5
University of Georgia
Athens, GA
October 4-6, 2007
20-minute papers on any topic related to teaching the history of the English language are invited, including but not limited to the following areas:
a.. the role of HEL in undergraduate and graduate programs in English;
b.. course content topics, such as the balance between internal and external history, HEL as introduction to linguistics, teaching ideas and methods;
c.. how those who teach HEL see the course and their own responsibilities to it;
d.. how HEL came to occupy the position that it has today in many English departments (i.e. as 'the' English-linguistics class, sometimes the only one offered in a department);
e.. HEL and teacher training;
f.. the future of HEL in English programs;
g.. how HEL fits into an overall teaching and research agenda.
Following SHEL formatting requirements, please submit abstracts as e-mail attachments in MS Word format. Please provide author name and contact information and the paper title in the body of the email to which the abstract is attached, and do not include author information on the attachment (abstract) itself.
