Pron. of "pathos"

Alan Cheuse (sp?), occasional contributor of book  commentary  on All
Things Considered,  pronounced "pathos" with the first vowel as /o/ in
/hot/  & the second  as /o/ in /both/.   Is this completely idiosyncratic?
I'm sure I've never heard it before.  I wonder if "bathos" would get the
same treatment?
