J. Douglas Harvey - who noted the Massatwoshits incident in WWII - also recalled that the above proverb was current in the Royal Canadian Air Force at that time:
1981 J. D. Harvey _Boys, Bombs, and Brussels Sprouts_ (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart) 25: Learning to salute was taught each and every day....The instructors...never bothered to tell us _who_ to salute....Always in doubt, we adhered to the age-old military dictum: 'If you see something, salute it. If it doesn't salute back, pick it up. If you can't pick it up, paint it."
(Noncommissioned officers and enlisted persons do not exchange salutes.)
