Here is my first nomination for Word of the Year 2007. I nominate
_Ashley's treatment_.
The Guardian (London) - Final Edition
January 8, 2007 Monday
SECTION: GUARDIAN INTERNATIONAL PAGES; Pg. 20
HEADLINE: Parents of disabled children ask doctors for 'Ashley treatment'
BYLINE: Ed Pilkington, New York
Doctors in Seattle who treated the severely disabled girl Ashley with
surgery and hormones to keep her at the size of a six-year-old child have
received requests from parents of other disabled children to repeat the
treatment.
Dan Gunther, an associate professor of paediatrics at the University of
Washington who devised Ashley's treatment with the blessing of her
parents, said four sets of parents had contacted him to ask that their
children be considered.
US media organisations have also been approached by parents keen to find
out whether their disabled children could have their growth stunted to
prevent them attaining full adult size.
I just got off the phone with a brief interview on Dublin radio (in
Ireland) and last night with BBC (London). We got a little attention on
local radio, too.
Happy New Year to all,
David
