hiving

I've been inactive on the list the last couple of weeks because my wife and I had a baby on 28 Dec. Not much time for internet, as you can imagine.

My mom visited us this weekend, and the baby made a smiling face at her. I said, "Look, he's grinning at you." She said, "No, he just hiving."

I had never heard this term before, and she said it was something her mom used to say when she was growing up (both my mom and her mom were from Southeast TN, Mom born 1940, her mom in the 1910's). I don't see it in either OED or HDAS, and I don't have a copy of DARE. Does anyone recognize "hiving" in this context? (a baby making a smiling face).
