I'm from upstate NY, and we always weed-whacked.  My husband is from  the San
Francisco Bay area, and they weed-eated.  They never  weed-ate.  The
understood weed-whacked if you used that term.  The  older generation, in fact, seemed
more comfy with weed-whacking, perhaps because  the brand name Weed Eater did
not exist when they were young; or perhaps because  they couldn't afford one
if it did.
