imminent/eminent confusion

In reporting the news/non-news of Homeland Sec'y Chertoff's  hunch that
there might be a terrorist event in the offing, the newsreader on NPR
hesitated momentarily  before uttering"eminent,"   his mental coin-flip
having fallen wrong.
We could say the likelihood of getting it wrong is "immanent," perhaps!
