Revisiting the "my-eye" rhyme

I asked several eastern Canadians at a Toastmasters conference this  weekend,
and they said that the only way "my" wouldn't rhyme with "eye" in  a way a
Canadian might say these words, would be to pronouce them "me  eye."  They felt
the Cockney pronunciation was substandard and only  occasional, but definitely
extant.
