How prevalent is the silent "t"

OK, that was just me getting indignant again. How on earth do these
people subscribe to the list? I have never in my life seen this sort
of thing before I joined this list -- people subscribing to a list
and then somehow being unaware that the emails they are getting from
it are from the list they subscribed to, and in reaction heaping
abuse on those who post to the list and even libelling them. It's
really getting on my nerves.
