I had the same problem earlier this year. Ultimately, I had to
resolve it by signing up as a new user paying the full rate rather
than the upgrade rate. It was the only way to get service.
The latest annoyance (besides the well-known failed system upgrade,
the new insistence on highlighting keywords at the beginning of KWIC
paragraphs rather than in the middle, the difficulty in clicking
through from Google News Archive results, the failure to permit
revising a search when there are no results, etc., etc.) is user
cookies that expire in a matter of hours, meaning I regularly have to
re-login in the middle of complex searches, made all the more
difficult by a stupid CSS trick and pages that don't cache properly
in the browser, preventing "back" page actions.
