Q: "Act in one"

I have "he came in full 'act in one' for he has long been a favorite
recitalist of American folk-sings with audiences the land over ...". 1925.

Can anyone elaborate on the meaning, which I take as meaning a solo
act but perhaps has additional connotations? And cite additional,
especially earlier, uses?
