Yes, I spoke too soon. Not only does the "snippet view" fail to show the 1943 "spit-shine," it includes ref. to a book published in 1989.

  A "Google twist" to be sure.

One must be careful with the Google Books search; sometimes the date is
very wrong, and one can't tell because there is no good page view.
