sorry, i wasn't clear enough in my earlier posting.  "traffic
bolster" surely is (or was, until this discussion started) a hapax
legomenon, a one-off.

the synagogue in question seems to be the Park Avenue Synagogue, at
50 E. 87th St.  i haven't been able to find a photo showing the
security devices.
