Work on regional variation in mass/count nouns?

The discussion of scissors & pliers -----unless I have missed some along
the way ------- has hardly mentioned "pair of " which to me is inseparable
from "a______scissors" or "a   ______pliers,"  even though "the scissors"
or "the pliers" is perfectly okay.

While the clippers for hair and hedges are always "clippers" they aren't
"pairs of" & the one for nails  is just a "nail clipper."
