Thanks, Ben. As usual, Arnold has (beautifully) said much of what needs to be said.

Arnold's (nonce?) verb "mis-scan" (2004): an eminently useful term for a phenomenon of increacing importance. I'm surprised the term hasn't achieved more "traction" (not in OED, not in UrbanDictionary, comparatively few Google hits).
