Heard on the Mad Dog

OK, Chris ("Mad Dog") Russo, co-host of the Mike and the Mad Dog
sports talk show, isn't as consistently prolific as the callers to
the Judges Wilson is always citing, but he's often good for one or
two bons mots.  From this afternoon's recap of yesterday's football
games:

"That game lost its mustard when..."

Presumably a cross between "lost its luster" and "cut the mustard";
the former is clearly what he had in mind, but it's not at all clear
to me why the mustard came in.
