And these are showing up differently for me in different people's quotes.
I'm viewing in Unicode UTF-8 and I see:

from Ron (each pair of hex digits is preceded by an equal sign, which I'm
omitting here):
    [C3 BC] ,[3],
     [C3 B8], [C3  A9], [C5 93], and [E2 88 82]


arnold quoting Ron (each in square brackets):
    ae ligature, u-umlaut, 3,
    o with slash through it, e with acute accent, oe ligature, partial
integral (like a curly small d with the top bending to the left)


Larry same as arnold excapt the last two (each in square brackets):
    ae ligature, u-umlaut, 3,
    o with slash through it, e with acute accent, vertical broken bar, blank


Michael C.:
    everything except the "3" is a black diamond with a white question mark
inside, which means "boss, I don't have a representation for this
character": apparently the same thing Michael saw.
