(re)analysis of 'speed-read'

I've always thought of 'speed-read' as a noun+verb compound (i.e. to read
with speed), but I recently heard it used in the past tense as "sped-read"
(with /E/ in both).

As might be expected there are several Googlible examples of the verb+verb
take on this compound.
