This of course follows the minor plural pattern in English found also in
"leaf/leaves," "hoof/hooves," etc., and (for many speakers, myself included)
"house/houses." I'm pretty sure that "roof/rooves" is charted as a regional dialect
variation in the Atlas materials collected beginning in the 1930s. Maybe DARE
mentions it as well.

NOAD recognizes the pronunciation of the plural pronunciaton of "roof" with
the /v/ variant, though not the spelling with <v>.
