English nearing 1,000,000 words?

Well, since none has offered to pose these crucial questions, I will:

1. What constitutes a word?

2. Which of the many Englishes are covered by the statement concerning the
number of words in English.

Neither has been answered to my knowledge.  Correct me if I'm wrong,
please.
