i realize this was a rhetorical question, but it certainly does.  i've
talked to several writers about their travails with Times copy editors
over taboo and slur vocabulary, and i've posted to Language Log a
number of times about the sometimes absurd results of the Times's
policies.

and of course the Times is unbending on a number of mechanical
matters, like its aversion to the serial comma, and on other
conventions.
