Heard on The Judges: "in play" = "in place"

Thirty-ish, black, female speaker:
"Because the carpets were not yet in play, we wanted to delay moving in."
Looks like "in place" > "in plays" > "in play," "in play" being quite
common in, e.g. sports contexts.
