Jon,

"Hot shop" in a war sense is also found on NewspaperArchive, 27 November
1915. A letter from a British soldier.

Subject: whizzbang, hot shop

OED restricts the meaning of "whizz-bang" to a high-velocity _German_ shell,
but usage varied:

1916-17 Bernard Adams _Nothing of Importance_ (London: Methuen) 124: Then
Trafalgar
Square has been rather a hot shop: two of our own whizz-bangs fell short
there, and several rifle grenades fell very close.

"Hot shop" is not in OED, though Adams uses it a number of times.
