"differ than"

We're used to "different than", but I just saw my first use of "differ
than": "How does this prayer differ than the traditional text?" Google has
about *74,200 hits for the phrase. The first couple seem to be from
non-native writers who mean "different than", but it looks like most of the
hits are genuine V + Prep.***
