Phonology question

Not that I've had a good chance to study this issue, really, but I
had the impression that the [s] could, in a case such as [dIsteIst],
be ambisyllabic. Or is ambisyllabicity controversial enough not to be
posited without argument? Somehow I've managed to get fairly far in
coursework without ever getting the chance to cover this issue
properly. Nobody seems to want to cover it...
