OED appeal for "scrunchie"

But also easy IMHO to see how "scrunch" > "scrunchy"/"scrunchie", where
"scrunch" is the routine English verb meaning "squeeze"/"crumple".
Which came first, "Scünci" or "scrunchy"?
Maybe "Scünci" _isn't_ originally a mangled form of "scrunchy" ... but
then what is it originally? An uncommon Italian surname or a Sicilian
verb variant, with a gratuitous dot or two?
