throwing up my socks--(basic question)

I don't understand the literal reference behind this expression.  How does one throw up one's socks?

A friend of mine just said that she spent Wednesday "throwing up my
socks". She is about 40 and grew up in Peoria, IL. She says she
thought it was pretty common. There is one hit on Google. Does any
