the proverb "there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" is the
more likely source, i'd think. these intrusions from one fixed
expression into another don't have to make a lot of sense (the
contributing expressions are often learned as wholes, without a lot of
attention to their literal semantics or the reasons why they might
have come to be used as they are), and it's probably a mistake to
spend a lot of time trying to rationalize them.
