uhn huhn interjected

It seems to me that in the last year or so, I've noticed interviewers on NPR
interjecting "uhn huhn!" quite a lot.  Is this a new strategy designed to
mark the end of a interviewee's statement or to suggest agreement or
understanding of the interviewee's comment?
