Senator Kennedy has written a letter to Massachusetts governor
Patrick and state government (majority) leaders, proposing a change
in the law so that if a U.S. Senate seat were to become vacant the
governor could make a temporary appointment immediately. (Current
law does not allow an interim appointment and requires an election
not earlier than about 4 months after a vacancy.) Richard Tisei,
(very small) minority leader of the state Senate, has objected,
saying such a change could have "unintended consequences that end up
happening as a result."
Of course, he did not tell us what any of these unintended
consequences that might happen as a result might be. I suppose one
might be the appointment of a liberal Democrat.
Interview shown on WCVB-TV, this evening.
