I have online access to the OED via two methods:
1. The state of Alabama has set up a digital consortium of libraries
and online databases (the Alabama Virtual Library --
http://www.avl.lib.al.us/databases/index.html ) that includes the OED.
All I need is a public library card. I know that other states have
similar programs -- check with yours.
2. The Mid-Continent Public Library in Kansas City allows non-resident
memberships for a very nominal fee. Not only does it include the OED,
but many other full-text databases (in fact, about the only one I don't
have but would really like is JSTOR).
Now if we could only figure out a way to get Jon Lighters Historical
Dictionary of American Slang online . . .
