but I see it has a long and honourable history, starting with Bunyan in a1688.

On this month's credit card statement from Chase:

"Your United Mileage Plus Visa allows you to earn unlimited miles for
your everyday spend."

Grates on my ears -- probably because the most recent OED2 quotation
is adspeak:  "1983 Observer 16 Jan. 8/4 The battle for advertising spend."
