"Take gas" = "take the meat," "eat the green weenie," etc., are
expressions that I've heard only in the military, except for, perhaps,
"take gas," which seems to occur in Jan & Dean's Sidewalk Surfin':

You'll probably eat it
The first time you try to shoot the curb
_Takin' gas(?)_ in the bush
Takes a lot of nerve
.
.
.
Shout "Kawabunga!"
As you? / And you'll? shoot right on through
Etc.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"---a strange complaint
to come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
