the dissappearing "awe" sound

Rather off-topic, but...

To my untrained amateur ear, one of the things that stands out most about a Scottish brogue (or a Glaswegian accent; I have a Glaswegian co-worker) is the pnonunciation of the word "Scot".

The vowel in "Scot" is not the "short-o" of "cot", but my ear keeps telling me it is not the /awe/ of "caught". What is this vowel? Or am I hearing a side-effect of the Scottish pronunciation of the surrounding consonants?
