Newsletter - Summer 2009: New Poll: 84 Percent of Americans Favor Official English
Critics of official English have long contended that the high degree of support for official English is temporary. Or they've tried to find fault with the pollsters who conduct nationwide surveys on the topic. The truth is that Americans remain wholeheartedly committed to making English the official language.

This May, Rasmussen Reports released the results of their latest poll, finding that 84 percent of Americans say that English should be made the official language of the United States. The nationwide poll of 1,000 adults found that just nine percent disagreed with the idea while seven percent were "not sure." Supporters of official English included more than nine-in-ten Republicans, nearly three-in-four Democrats and more than five-in-six individuals not affiliated with either party.

The results of the Rasmussen poll are in line with the results of other polls conducted over the years. Below are the data from surveys conducted over the years, including the firm conducting the poll and the year.
