Herb,
I'll have to check this out among my students, who tend to be
distributed between SE and SW/WC Michigan--I wasn't aware of anything
beyond simple Canadian Raising + variability, although I did notice
that the first element of the vowel of down isn't always [A], and
that the presence of this feature differentiates Michiganders from
those from the Chicago area and Northern Ohio, who really do have
[ai] (and often front,not central)and [Au].
