How about "street", from Latin "[via] strata" 'paved road'?
OED, after many lines of cognates, notes:

Attested early in place names (chiefly with reference to Roman roads;
compare sense A. 1), as Strætford (a1016; now Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk),
Stretford (c1025 in a copy of a charter of 781; now Stratford on Avon,
Warwickshire), Stratune (1086; now East Stretton, Hampshire), etc.
