I don't know about Alfred E. Newman, but I do remember Ross Perot on television (it must have been a presidential debate) saying "I'm all ears." (i.e., he would be eagerly listening for a solution to some problem). And since Perot's protruding ears are a salient feature of his appearance, the audience found this statement very amusing. And IIRC, Perot did too.
