I was familiar with versions of this by the time I left Vietnam in 1969.  By
what Pete Seeger calls the "folk process" (and the fact that I am a
natcherl-borned editor), I eventually settled on "We are the unwilling led
by the unknowing to do the unnecessary for the ungrateful.  We have done so
much, with so little, for so long that we are ready to do any damn thing for
no reason at all."
