The policy of integration in the Marine Corps was promulgated on 13 December
1951. Within a year, more than 5% of the Corps was African-American.

Prior to 1951, blacks did serve in the Corps, but in relatively few numbers.
There had been some segregated units since 1942 and, like the in Navy, they
could always serve as stewards. During WWII, some tens of thousands of black
Marines served in segregated units.
