I would have thought the proverbial bagel is actually the proverbial
donut. But, with the decline of the "holed" donut and the simultaneous
rise of the bagel as a "healthy" alternative toroidal breakfast treat, I
guess, the metaphor has evolved. At least, the players are not crying
into their Cheerios. (And there is nothing cheery about that!)
