New to me, and not in the OED. But apparently that's what they call 'em:
SST Ticket Spitter (R_ / Model Model MG 1000
http://www.federalapd.com/pdf/SSTSpitter.pdf
(1) Back to 1955, allegedly (via Google Books, snippet):
"Parking" magazine [who knew?], e.g. p. 109 [which GB classifies as
"House and Home"!]:
That is why Latham Time Recording Systems were chosen for the new
"Ticket Splitter" by Automatic Parking Devices.
I note that the SST Model MG 100 is made by "Federal APD / Federal
Signal Corporation", presumably the successor of "Automatic Parking Devices".
(2) 1956 May (vol. 168, No. 5). p. 116:
"... Stubs Go Automatic A "ticket spitter" time-stamps identification
cards for motorists entering this Detroit municipal parking lot.
Activated by a treadle over which the cars must roll, it cuts down on
the attendant's work. ..." [Clearly a more primitive mechanism.]
Neither verified on paper, but GB gives us an image of the Popular
Science page.
(3) 2010 Aug. 10:
Please drive to the next spitter and take your ticket.
