past perfect for past

Does anyone know of literature that discusses the use of past perfect instead of simple past in the speech of younger Americans?  I was referred here from funknet, where I learned that this was a feature of AAVE (and given a nice reference to work by John Rickford and Christine Theberge-Rafal), but one poster noted that he noticed its use outside AAVE, among younger speakers at Penn.
