Loosening a "fixed expression"

"I am often _betwixt and befuddled_ by the hypocrisy ..."

Some of the village elders here may recall _betwixt and between_ as
having once been described by restrictive grammarians as a "fixed expression."

I wonder what the writer understands by "betwixt."
