"strand" = strain

I was sure I'd posted something on this years ago, but the Archives are
silent.  No matter.

Around 1999-2000 I heard a local woman talking about "a different strand of
the flu."  She meant "strain."

On this week's _Bad Girls Club_, two of the principals, one from Boston and
one from LA, both very clearly spoke of a "strand of the swine flu."

The excresecent / d / was quite audible.
