For some reason, a scrap of doggerel describing the consequences of
asserting the traditional right of sail to take precedence over steam
springs to mind:

        Here lie the bones of Johnny Day
        Who died defending his right of way;
        He held to his right and he held to it strong
        But he's just as dead as if he were wrong.
